Do you have a space that is large and open but want to create that cozy comfortable feeling? Do you have a small space that you want to be more open and airy? This dilemma is a very common one when trying to design your interior space.
Having a good understanding of volume with positive and negative space would be the start of figuring out how to transform your space into the inviting retreat that you always imagined. Volume can either be solid (positive space that has mass and appears to occupy space) or void (negative space itself defined by planes and other elements).
Taking advantage of your large open space with high ceilings would be a compliment to furnishings that are heavier in their design, also closer to the ground and ample with height. Larger pieces of artwork, pronounced floor lamps and large area rugs would be ideal to tie in the space. Creating separate seating groupings for multiple activities are a wonderful way to breakup the space which will result in a cozier setting.

For those of you with smaller spaces that would like to open it up, It's best to look for furnishings that are lighter and airy by sight. Sofas and tables with higher legs for example to create negative space flowing beneath. Careful placement of accessories are essential to having a space that has just the right finishing touches without looking like clutter. Keep in mind the color palette as well, which may greatly effect the openness of your space. Checkout last months blog about color.
